Several Republicans said they would stick with rival Jim Jordan, who lost to Scalise in a secret-ballot vote on Wednesday. As they came and went from a closed-door meeting, Republicans appeared no closer to breaking the impasse. 'AT A STANDSTILL'Jordan has encouraged his supporters to vote for Scalise, according to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity. Democrats have backed their leader, Hakeem Jeffries, in past speaker votes and are expected to do so again. Trump in an interview with Fox News Radio on Thursday said he did not object to Scalise as speaker.

"When we go to the floor, there'll be at least a relatively high expectation on the part of Steve Scalise and his team that he's got the votes," said Representative John Duarte, a Scalise supporter. Republican leaders initially scheduled a House meeting for Wednesday afternoon, should Scalise, now the No. 2 House Republican, quickly come up with the votes for election. Asked how long it could take to fill the speaker vacancy, Representative Richard Hudson, who chairs the House Republican campaign arm, told reporters: "No idea.". Before his nomination, Scalise and his allies worked to defeat a closed-door effort to require a candidate to win 217 Republican votes to become the nominee.

[1/3] Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) speak to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., October 29, 2019. Buck said Jordan and Scalise provided unsatisfactory answers on the question of reining in spending on Tuesday night. Scalise and Jordan have both racked up several dozen endorsements, but neither has a clear path to success. Some moderates, for example, have warned that Jordan becoming speaker would give Democrats plenty of ammunition for next year's congressional elections. "I think Jim Jordan will end up getting it, and if not, Scalise would be fine," said Representative Ralph Norman, who supports Jordan.

There are two declared candidates so far in the closed-door, secret-ballot vote: Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who is No. Even before lawmakers start voting on a speaker, they are expected to decide how many votes the nominee will need to win. It took only eight Republicans to oust McCarthy last week, a fact that could make leading the caucus a challenge for any new speaker. At least 217 House Republicans will need to agree on a candidate to avoid a repeat of January's messy speakership battle, when McCarthy needed 15 rounds of voting to win the speaker's gavel. Some moderates, for example, have warned that a Speaker Jordan would give Democrats plenty of ammunition for next year's congressional elections.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) - A group of New York state Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives will introduce a motion to expel indicted fellow Republican George Santos from the chamber, two of the members said on Wednesday. Santos pleaded not guilty to an initial May indictment and has said he will do the same for the new one. A motion to expel would require support from two-thirds of members in the House, meaning 290 votes. Democrats have repeatedly called for Santos to be expelled, and over a dozen Republicans have done the same. "If they want to be judge, jury and arbitrator of the whole goddamn thing, let them do it," Santos said on Wednesday.

Jordan is a leading defender of former President Donald Trump, who remains a major figure in the Republican party. Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, endorsed Jordan for House speaker on Friday. As of Friday, both Scalise and Jordan had secured roughly two dozen endorsements from among the 221 Republicans in the House. Scalise returned to the Capitol in September and has said that he is healthy enough to serve as speaker. Jordan, 59, is an outsider to party leadership.

WASHINGTON, Oct 4 (Reuters) - The race to replace ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy took shape on Wednesday as Steve Scalise, the chamber's No. 2 Republican, and Jim Jordan, a leading antagonist of Democratic President Joe Biden, said they would seek the post. "Everybody's just taking a breath and in listening mode, without any serious commitments," said Republican Representative Dan Crenshaw. The last Republican speaker, Paul Ryan, retired from Congress after struggling to work with Trump, a fellow Republican. The entire House - Republicans and Democrats - vote for speaker, who would hold the position until early January 2025, unless they were deposed as well.

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - A handful of Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday ousted Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy, as party infighting plunged Congress into further chaos just days after it narrowly averted a government shutdown. McCarthy told reporters he would not make another run for speaker. [1/5]Former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) speaks to reporters after he was ousted from the position of Speaker by a vote of the House of Representatives at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S. October 3, 2023. Representative Garret Graves, a longtime McCarthy ally, called the current rule structure "completely dysfunctional". The motion to vacate rule is enshrined in the U.S. House's governing manual, but the specifics of it are left to each Congress to decide. Before 2019, the motion to vacate was considered a privileged motion, which any one member could bring to the House floor. But after two Republican speakers were threatened with and ultimately left office over the move, Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi pushed a rule change that required a majority of the conference to support a motion to vacate. Representative Jim Jordan, who is running for speaker, said he would leave any rule change up to the conference.

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's grip on power was in question on Tuesday as the House of Representatives, driven by Republican infighting, was holding a historic vote that could remove him from his job. If the rebellion by right-wing fellow Republicans against McCarthy is successful, it would be the first time in U.S. history that House lawmakers voted their leader out. "We need a speaker who will fight for something - anything - other than staying on as speaker," said Republican Representative Bob Good. WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Embattled U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday teed up a vote on a challenge to his leadership by a fellow Republican, in an intra-party dispute that could plunge Congress into chaos. McCarthy said the House of Representatives will vote later in the day on a motion by Representative Matt Gaetz, a McCarthy antagonist, that could potentially remove him from his post. The chamber could hold a straight up or down vote, or could hold a vote to sideline it. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries declined to say how his members would vote, or whether they would vote as a unit. I think that that's pretty telling," said Republican Representative Tim Burchett, who said he would vote to oust McCarthy.

President Joe Biden asked Congress in July to approve another $24 billion related to Ukraine, which Ukraine supporters - Republicans as well as Democrats - had hoped could become law as part of a spending bill. A U.S. official said that, as of Monday, the Defense Department had $1.6 billion left to replace weapons sent to Ukraine, no funds left under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) and $5.4 billion worth of Presidential Drawdown Authority. But he, and some other Republicans in both the House and Senate, refused to include more aid for Ukraine in the measure. "Today, DoD has exhausted nearly all available security assistance funding for Ukraine," McCord wrote in the letter, dated Sept. 29 and expressing concern that the stopgap spending bill did not include security assistance for Ukraine. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Kyiv was in talks with Republicans and Democrats in Congress, and that the drama around the stopgap bill was an "incident" rather than something systemic.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Congress passed a stopgap funding bill late on Saturday with overwhelming Democratic support after Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy backed down from an earlier demand by his party’s hardliners for a partisan bill. That move marked a profound shift from earlier in the week, when a shutdown looked all but inevitable. Congress typically passes stopgap spending bills to buy more time to negotiate the detailed legislation that sets funding for federal programs. House Republicans are demanding a further $120 billion in cuts. “House Republicans tried to walk away from that deal by demanding drastic cuts that would have been devastating for millions of Americans.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. House of Representatives passed a stopgap funding bill on Saturday with overwhelming Democratic support after Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy backed down from an earlier demand by party hardliners for a partisan bill. Time remained short to avoid the federal government’s fourth partial shutdown in a decade, which will begin at 12:01 a.m. ET (0401 GMT) on Sunday unless the Democratic-majority Senate passes the bill and President Joe Biden signs it into law in time. “Under these circumstances, I’m recommending a ‘no’ vote, even though I very much want to avoid a government shutdown,” McConnell said. “I want to be the adult in the room, go ahead and try,” McCarthy told reporters.

That move marked a profound shift from earlier in the week, when a shutdown looked all but inevitable. "Democrats have said from the start that the only solution for avoiding a shutdown is bipartisanship, and we are glad Speaker McCarthy has finally heeded our message." Democratic Senator Michael Bennet held the bill up for several hours trying to negotiate a deal for further Ukraine aid. House Republicans are demanding a further $120 billion in cuts. That bill would have cut spending and imposed immigration and border security restrictions, Republican priorities that had little chance of passing the Democratic-majority Senate. "It's not the end yet; I've got other ideas," Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporters following the defeat of a bill he had backed. Social Security payments themselves would continue. Lawmakers are not considering cuts to popular benefit programs such as Social Security and Medicare. Several hardliners have threatened to oust McCarthy from his leadership role if he passes a spending bill that requires any Democratic votes to pass, an outcome almost guaranteed given that any successful House bill must also pass the Senate, controlled by Democrats 51-49.
